As proud sponsors of The 2017 Surrey Property Awards, GCL enjoyed an entertaining evening celebrating the very best of Surrey's property professionals. Entertainment was provided by the charismatic Gyles Brandreth who wowed the audience and helped raise much needed funds for Challengers Guildford.
Another Superb Golf Day at Old Thorns. With the weather on our side once again – how do we manage that? – another excellent day’s golf was had by all at the annual GCL Golf Day at Old Thorns on 8th July. There was plenty of friendly rivalry along the way, but the overall winner was Toby Mead, MD of Bonham Property and the winning team comprised: Simon Wilson (GCL), Nick Jackson (Millgate Homes) and Neil Simpson (Bewley Homes). The nearest-the-pin winners were Henry Lee (GCL), John Manser (Anthony James Manser) and Andy Wilson (GCL). The day was expertly managed as always by the very proficient Old Thorns team.
GCL are delighted to announce the promotion of Partner, Mark Grant to Fixed Equity Partner. His wide and diverse experience has been a great asset to the many clients Mark and his team represent and his rapid progress to Partner in 2015, and now Fixed Equity Partner just two years later, reflects his continued growth within the company.
Following the highly successful 2017 Surrey Property Awards, for which GCL was a sponsor, the Company was delighted to accept an invitation to attend the presentation of a cheque for an amazing £16,298 raised on the evening, to the nominated charity, Challengers. Managing Partner, Tony Inkin and Associate, Gemma Baugh (front right) were there on behalf of GCL.
GCL once again gave their support to four of rugby’s finest players who traded in their rugby shirts for chef’s jackets to take part in Wooden Spoon’s unique fundraiser, Scrum Dine With Me at the distinguished Cinnamon Kitchen in London. The event was a huge success, raising £20,000 for charity.
A great day was had by all at the T20 cricket at Sussex CC. On 28th July GCL hosted an afternoon of fast paced T20 cricket at Hove.
Planning Seminar Success. On 21st June 2017, GCL in association with Bespoke Property Consultants organised and hosted a very successful planning seminar for its clients at the Cobham Hilton. Following a drinks reception and buffet, Andy Leahy from Bespoke Property Consultants addressed ‘Viability in the Planning Process’ and ‘Affordable Housing’, whilst GCL’s Haroon Khan advised on ‘Permissions in Principle (PiPs)’. A busy question and answer session followed the presentations and the seminar was heralded a great success.
The stunning and historic Loseley House was GCL's chosen venue for this year's fine dining event. The experience started with a champagne reception in the grand Drawing Room followed by a specially prepared dinner in the Great Hall. Loseley House is the family home of the More-Molyneux family. The evening was judged a triumph with guests saying how privileged they felt to dine in such grand surroundings.
A fabulous evening was had by the GCL team who attended The Surrey Property Awards on 24th November. The event, which is heralded as the most successful property awards event of its kind outside of London is a night the team really enjoys, as it provides an excellent opportunity to meet up with so many people and celebrate all that is so good about working in the property sector.
GCL and Guests Enjoy The Best Weather and Golf at Old Thorns
For the 15th year GCL took the opportunity to entertain clients and staff at Old Thorns for its annual golf day. The sun was shining and as the mercury rose so did the tension around the fabulous course, but eventually the individual winner was declared as Chris Chiles MD of Vanderbilt Homes and the winning team also being announced with the team players being: Richard Prynne (Pewleys), Frazer Mackay (Advanta Group), William Togher (Kidbrook Homes) and Doug Fordham (GCL).
Dragon Boat Challenge
The Berkeley Homes (Capital) Dragon Boat Race Challenge has become one of the must get involved with events for the adventurous and fearless GCL team. The ancient Chinese tradition, which is also becoming one of the UK's fastest growing water based activities, now regularly attracts well over 30 crews who battle it out over the 200m race course every summer. The GCL team proudly demonstrated their paddling and team skills, but haven't, as yet, announced their finishing position, but did declare it to be a fabulous day and huge fun.
GCL Take to the Cathedral to Raise Funds for Charity
GCL are firm supporters of the children’s charity Wooden Spoon, whose mission is ‘to positively transform the lives of disadvantaged and disabled children and young people across the UK and Ireland through the power of rugby’. So when the opportunity arose to abseil down Guildford Cathedral: Michelle Clarke, Natalie Lyden, Rita De, Ben Inkin and Simon Wilson’s son Josh took part in the trial and raised over £1,500.00 for the company’s favoured charity.
Private Dining at Watts Gallery, Guildford
On one of the warmest days of the year so far GCL clients and staff enjoyed a fabulous private dinning experience at Watts Gallery. The event was also attend by the Atlantic Drifters, Dave Lambert and Tom Brunwin, who regaled the highs and lows of their epic adventure rowing the Atlantic to finish first their class in the Talisker Whisky Challenge earlier this year. The private dinner has been heralded as - one of the most memorable and special evenings !
GCL v Berkeley Homes – 5-A-Side
The on-going rivalry between the GCL and Berkeley Homes Southern 5-a-side football teams continued when they met at Leatherhead Leisure Centre on 14th March.
With a team comprising; Simon Wilson, Farouk Egala, Josh Giles, Gareth Fullbrook, James Gray and Captain, Ben Inkin, GCL made a good start to take an early lead. The Berkeley team however, fought back with some good finishes and the help of two own goals from GCL! Midfield playmaker, Fullbrook then took control and secured a hard fought victory with a 10-6 score line!
Tour of Fullers Brewery
GCL Solicitors started the New Year by inviting their clients to enjoy a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the Fullers Brewery in Chiswick. This fascinating glimpse into the journey of a pint of beer was both fun and informative. The evening was rounded off with dinner in an adjacent pub – a Fuller’s pub of course!
2015 Legendary Old Thorns Golf Day
GCL staff and guests were once again treated to an excellent golf day at Old Thorns in Liphook on 11th July. Returning to Old Thorns for the 13th time, there was nothing unlucky about this day. With the weather at its best, a thoroughly enjoyable and successful time was had by all participants and was rounded-off with the presentation of individual prizes and a BBQ.

Guildford Festival of Cricket

GCL clients enjoyed a relaxed and sunny afternoon of fine hospitality and quality cricket when Surrey played Glamorgan at the Guildford Cricket Festival.
Go-kart Endurance Event with Berkeley Homes Southern
11th June 2015
Gareth Fullbrook and Simon Wilson completed a team of six who took part in a charity go-kart endurance event with Berkeley Homes Southern. Each team took it in turns to race around the track, and complete as many laps as possible in the given time. The event was held at the Daytona outdoor go-kart race track, at Sandown Racecourse, and the participants were hoping to raise £7,500 for their designated charity, The Queen Elizabeth Foundation.
Charity Colour Run
7th June 2015
An intrepid team from GCL took on the Colour Run Challenge on one of the sunniest Sundays of the year so far. The team consisted of Ben Inkin, Lucy Eldred, Dan Blake, James Gray, Fiona Hampton, Rebecca Bolt, Claire Speller, Kate Maguire and Lauren Diederich. They completed the 5k run in around 30-40 minutes and raised an incredible £1,660.00 plus gift aid for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The Atlantic Drifters
GCL are extremely proud to announce their sponsorship of heroic duo Tom Brunwin and Dave Lambert, aka The Atlantic Drifters, as they prepare for their monumental 3,000 nautical mile row across the Atlantic on 15th December. They are raising money for the DDMT (Lt. Dougie Dalzell MC Memorial Trust) and Oaks Charities and GCL wish them every success in reaching their £100k target. Lunch with Jonny Wilkinson

The Partners at GCL invited their clients to join them for lunch at the Bengal Clipper in London and enjoyed an afternoon in the company of Jonny Wilkinson. Hosted by John Inverdale, the afternoon provided a fantastic insight into the mind of a truly great rugby player whose passion for the game is as strong as it has always been.

And just when you thought this might be the game that our Scottish neighbours could steal to win the Calcutta Cup, GCL and its guests were treated to an England win over Scotland, coupled with some superb hospitality both pre and post the game.

And another superb day was enjoyed by GCL and its clients on Super Saturday at the game that saw a brilliantly gallant effort from England in front of a fervent crowd at Twickenham. Now the Six Nations is over GCL is bereft of rugby until later this year when rugby world cup fever takes over!
New Software 'Liberates' GCL and its wide client base.
A revolutionary new software package, 'Liberate' that has been specially adapted for GCL Solicitors has been launched and is now in use by the firms many new homes clients. Read more in the next edition of On The Case, but early reports from both sides of the fence suggest that 'Liberate' does exactly what it says - frees up time and keeps the paper trail to a minimum through its excellent tracking of cases.
Newly appointed to the position of department secretary for the International team is Laura Giles, who has also been nominated by so many of her colleagues that she has also scooped the ' Employee of the Quarter' award, which is an initiative run by GCL. The award is is voted for by all employees and this quarter Laura won hands down for her supreme ability to be adaptable, thoughtful and always willing to be helpful and go the extra distance for clients and colleagues alike. Well done Laura and spend wisely in House of Fraser!
